Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Department is responsible for the following functions:

– Assessing the safety and efficacy of herbal preparations from the Centre and other herbal medicine manufacturers.
– Conducting pre-clinical studies on medicinal plants to develop products.
– Creating animal models for different disease conditions.
– Undertaking biochemical and pharmacological studies relevant to herbal medicine R&D.
– Breeding laboratory animals for pre-clinical research purposes.

The Animal Experimentation Unit (AEU) is furnished with both animal husbandry facilities and a laboratory for conducting experiments. Specializing in breeding laboratory rats and mice, researchers at the Centre utilize these animals for their experiments. Additionally, the unit focuses on developing animal models for a range of disease conditions. It upholds the highest global standards for animal care and ensures the implementation of strict ethical standards in the use of laboratory animals at the Centre. Moreover, purchasers of our laboratory animals are required to adhere to rigorous care and ethical standards in their utilization of the animals.
