Dr. Maxwell Mamfe Sakyiamah

PROFILE

Dr. Sakyiamah holds PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, MPhil and BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Ghana, Legon. He joined the Centre in 2010 as a Research Officer.

Research interest:

  1. Drug discovery and development from natural products using chromatographic techniques: Bioactivity-guided fractionation, isolation and purification of compounds from medicinal plants with anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertension, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory activities etc.
  2. Generation of compound libraries for standardization and quality control of herbal medicines. Establish the pharmacokinetic parameters of isolated compounds from medicinal plants.
  3. Drug interactions (Herb-drug interaction): Effects of plant extracts on the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and metabolism of other drugs.
  4. Development of sensitive bioassay systems for high-throughput screening of compounds (peptides, synthesized small compounds and fractions/isolates from medicinal plants).
  5. Peptidomimetics (Design and synthesis of peptides for drug development targeting specific receptors/enzymes eg. chemokine receptor – CXCR4).
  6. Development of bio-probes with receptor – binding affinity for imaging (eg. Confocal laser scanning microscopy) applied in drug discovery.
  7. Structure-activity relationship studies (SARs) between receptors/enzymes and their ligands (natural products isolated from medicinal plants, synthesized small compounds and peptides).
  8. Bioremediation- improving the nutritional value and medicinal properties of plants/plant parts.
