SERVICE OVERVIEW

The Microbiology Department traces its origins back to 1989 when it began as a unit within the Clinical Laboratory, initially staffed by a Senior Technician. Initially offering clinical support to the Clinic through patient sample examination and culture and sensitivity tests, the department’s responsibilities expanded over time, leading to the enhancement of its infrastructure and human resources. By 1998, it had evolved into a fully-fledged Research Department, comprising three laboratories manned by three Research Officers and a Technician. Subsequent upgrades in 2017, supported by the West African Health Organization (WAHO), saw the department’s infrastructure further expanded, culminating in the establishment of five main laboratories dedicated to various aspects of microbiological research and testing.
