Officials representing the World Health Organization (WHO) embarked on a significant working visit to the Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR). This delegation consisted of experts from various branches of the WHO, including representatives from the WHO Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices, as well as members of the Regional Expert Advisory Committee on Traditional Medicine for COVID-19 Response (REACT) and the Africa Centre for Disease Control.

The primary objective of this visit was to conduct a comprehensive review of the country’s advancements in developing traditional medicine-based therapeutics for the treatment of COVID-19. Additionally, the visit aimed to formulate a strategic plan of action to offer technical assistance and support in strengthening the national capacity in identified areas related to COVID-19 response.

During the visit, the CPMR COVID-19 research team had the opportunity to provide detailed updates to the WHO officials. They highlighted the progress and ongoing clinical trials of one of the Centre’s prominent products, NIBIMA, specifically developed for the treatment of COVID-19. This exchange of information facilitated an in-depth discussion on the potential efficacy and role of traditional medicine in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

The collaborative engagement between the WHO and the Centre for Plant Medicine Research signifies a concerted effort to leverage both traditional and contemporary approaches in addressing global health challenges. Through mutual exchange and support, the visit aimed to enhance research capacities, foster partnerships, and ultimately contribute to the development of effective treatments for COVID-19.
